Einfaches Sommerkleid -- Simple Summer Dress

Der Sommer ist unterwegs und, wie im letzten Post festgestellt, bin ich ein Mädchen (manchmal) und natürlich braucht ein Mädchen ein paar Kleider. Am liebsten passende, individuelle, die wenig kosten. Ich besitze ein schickes kleines Sommerkleid und habe festgestellt, dass es ja gar nicht so schwer ist, sowas selber zu machen. Also habe ich mir genau angeguckt, wie sich das Kleid zusammensetzt, es auf das Wesentliche heruntergerechnet und dieser Schnitt ist dabei herausgekommen:

With summer on its way and, as stated in the last post, my being a girl (sometimes) I have come to the conclusion that a girl needs some dresses. Preferably ones that fit, are individual and cost little. I own a pretty little summer dress and have realised that it's actually not that hard to make these things yourself. So, after taking a close look at how that dress is put together and breaking it down to the basics, I made the following pattern:

 Man braucht jedes Teil zweimal, beziehungsweise das Oberteil nur einmal, an den Trägern im Stoffbruch (falls man die Schulternaht sparen möchte). Das Oberteil entspricht dem Brustumfang, das Rockteil dem Taillenumfang (an die Hüften sollte man hierbei allerdings auch denken). Beim Zusammennähen legt man den überschüssigen Stoff des Oberteils in zwei gleichgroße Falten. Vorne lässt man diese Falten offen, hinten näht man sie fest, ungefähr so:

 Cut out two of each piece or, respectively, only one top-part if you cut the straps on the fold of the fabric (economising on the shoulder seams). The top-part corresponds to the chest girth and the skirt-part to the waist (but don't forget to consider the hips). When sewing it together, you fold the excess fabric on the top-part into two equal creases. On the front, leave the creases as they are – on the back, sew them shut, like so: 

 

Diese Abnäher, die hier außerdem zu sehen sind, muss/kann man machen, wenn das Kleid an den Armausschnitten absteht. Irgendwann finde ich bestimmt eine andere Lösung für dieses Problem und kann es direkt so zuschneiden oder nähen, dass das nicht passiert. Ich lerne im Vorbeigehen.

Wenn Ober- und Unterteil miteinander verbunden sind und die Naht an der richtigen Stelle sitzt, näht man die Träger zusammen, dann die Seiten (wenn der Rock etwas mehr schwingen soll, ist jetzt die Zeit für ein paar Keile in den Seitennähten) und setzt den Reißverschluss ein. Dann nur noch den Ausschnitt … ausschneiden, offene Kanten säumen (ich lasse Kleider gern hinten etwas länger, damit ich mich auf der Straße bücken kann, um die Schuhe zu binden oder Dinge aufzuheben, die mir dauernd runterfallen, ohne dass alle Welt meine Unterwäsche sieht) und ein paar Knöpfe o. Ä. zur Dekoration annähen – Voilà, fertig.

Those tucks you also see here have to/can be done if the dress is aloof around the “sleeves” (← I am sorry, I don't know the English word for these things. “The place where the sleeves would go if there were any” seemed a bit too long. Are they called sleeve-holes even if there are no sleeves?). Some day, I might just find another solution for this problem and will be able to cut or sew it so this doesn't happen. I learn by doing.

Once top and bottom are attached to each other and the seam is in the right place, join the straps, then the sides (If you want the skirt to swing some more, this is the time for wedges in the side-seams) and put in the zip. Now cut out the décolleté *yay for fancy French words*, hem the open edges (I tend to leave the backside of dresses slightly longer so I can bend down to tie my shoes in the middle of the street or to pick up the things I constantly drop, without all the world seeing my underwear), sew on some buttons or things of the like for decoration – There you go, done.

 

Meine erste Version ist dieses blumige Ding hier. Bis jetzt war es noch nicht warm genug, um es anzuziehen, aber der Tag kommt bestimmt bald. Was ich an diesem Kleid am meisten liebe ist die Tatsache, dass es aus recyceltem Stoff besteht. Früher war dieser Stoff die Vorhänge in meinem Zimmer und Vorhänge sind nunmal große viereckige Stücke, aus denen man immer mal wieder was Anderes machen kann. Hier ein kleines Bild zur Evolutionsgeschichte meiner Vorhänge:

 My first version is this flowery thing here. The weather hasn't been warm enough for me to wear it but that day will surely come soon. What I love most about this dress is that it's made of recycled fabric. This fabric used to be the curtains in my room and curtains are nothing other than big square things that can always be used to make something else out of. Behold the evolutionary history of my curtains:

 

Die zweite Version, nur der Vollständigkeit halber, ist dieses Herbstkleid in ganz neutralem schwarz mit Ärmeln. Tatsächlich bin ich mit diesen Ärmeln gar nicht zufrieden und werde mich bald mal damit auseinandersetzen.

The second version, just for the sake of completeness, is this plain black autumn dress with sleeves. To be honest, I'm absolutely not happy with the sleeves and will sit down and give them a good talking to pretty soon.

 

Es gibt leider kein Bild, auf dem ich dieses Kleid trage, weil Fotos mit Selbstauslöser machen ziemlich schwierig ist und ich erst eine Weile später gemerkt habe, dass man auf allen Fotos meine BH-Träger sieht oder das Innenteil vom Ausschnitt rausguckt. Überhaupt sind meine Fotos nur halbwegs gelungen. Immer dann, wenn ich die Pose hatte, dachte ich: „Okay, beim nächsten Versuch noch ein Lächeln, dann ist es richtig“ aber ich hab's nie hingekriegt. Es war anstrengend und ich habe die Geduld verloren. Sowieso sieht mein Lächeln komisch aus. Deswegen nur ernste Fotos.

 Unfortunately, there's no photo of me wearing this dress as taking photos with self-timer is quite difficult and I only realised a while later that my bra-straps or the inside of the neckline were visible in all the photos. Overall, these photos are only half nice. Every time I had gotten the pose right, I thought: “Alright, now another try, this time with a smile, then it'll be fine” but I never quite managed. It was exhausting and I did lose patience. My smile looks strange, anyway. That's why there are only serious photos.

 

Version drei ist ein bisschen aufwändiger gestaltet und gefällt mir bis jetzt am besten. Es hat was von Alice im Wunderland, finde ich (daher das Buch in meiner Hand und so). Alice hat schon immer meine Fantasie auf seltsame Art und Weise geprägt und ich glaube meine Ticks für Uhren und Schlüssel haben ihre Wurzeln irgendwo in meiner Begeisterung für diese Geschichte. Aber ich schweife ab …

 Version three is a slightly more elaborate design and the one I like best so far. It looks a bit “Alice in Wonderland”-ish, I think (hence the book in my hand and stuff). Alice has always been a strange influence to my imagination and I believe that my quirks for clocks and keys are rooted somewhere in my enthusiasm for this story. Excuse me, I'm wandering from the subject …

Ex-Männer Shirts -- Ex-guys' shirts

Ja, diese Überschrift ist mit voller Absicht irritierend.

Bei dieser meiner neusten Kreation handelt es sich um zwei viel zu große T-Shirts in Männergröße, die ich in ihrem ursprünglichen Zustand irgendwann mal cool fand und so tatsächlich getragen habe. Im Büro. In der Öffentlichkeit.

Am Anfang waren es zwei billige weiße Shirts, auf die ich Teile von anderen Shirts genäht habe, die mir nicht mehr passten/ Flecken oder Löcher hatten.

Yes, this headline is designed to be vexing.

This latest creation of mine are two much too large t-shirts, men's size, which I used to think were cool in their original state at some point and which I actually wore like this. In the office. In public.

At first, they were two cheap white tees onto which I sewed parts of other shirts that didn't fit anymore/ had stains or holes.

 

Teile von mir haben nun allerdings beschlossen, dass wir doch ein Mädchen sind und diese T-Shirts nicht mehr wirklich cool sind. Also – man hat ja nichts zu verlieren – schnell mal in die Werkstatt damit. (Die Werkstatt ist auf den Fotos übrigens im Hintergrund zu sehen. Meine Kamera ist kaputt, da musste ich mir mit dem Handy behelfen)

Lately, parts of me have decided that we are actually a girl and these t-shirts aren't really cool anymore. So – since there was nothing to lose anyway – off to the workshop they went. (By the way, you can see the workshop in the background of the photos. My camera broke, so I had to use my phone)

 

Für Modell A braucht man nur drei Stücke Gummiband, die man an den Ärmeln und kurz über der Hüfte festnäht (Hierbei ist es wichtig, dass das Shirt ein ordentliches Stück zu lang ist, sonst entsteht kein richtiges „Röckchen“) Ehrlich gesagt hatte ich nicht damit gerechnet, dass das Endergebnis so gut aussieht.

All you need for Model A is three pieces of elastic strap which you attach to the sleeves and just above the hips (It is essential for the shirt to be a fair bit too long, otherwise there won't be a nice “skirt” part) To be honest, I didn't expect it to look so neat in the end.

 

Modell B ist schon ein bisschen friemeliger, aber grundsätzlich auch einfach. Man schlägt den überschüssigen Stoff auf Hüfthöhe (oder halt auch höher) um und näht ihn innen und außen fest. Außen lässt man die Naht an beiden Enden ein Stück offen, damit man das Band durchziehen kann. Hier habe ich übriggebliebene Streifen Jeans-Stoff benutzt aber mit Schuhriemen würde es bestimmt auch gut aussehen. Die Ärmel sind genauso gemacht wie bei Modell A.

Model B is slightly more fiddly but basically just as simple to do. Fold the excess fabric above the hips (or higher even) and sew it inside and out. Leave the seam open a bit on both ends on the outside so you can insert the strap. I used leftover strips of jeans-fabric but it sure would work just as well with shoelaces. The sleeves are done like Model A.

 

An keinem T-Shirt musste ich rumschnibbeln und man könnte die Veränderungen sogar rückgängig machen, würde man wollen.

Und das Beste ist, dass ich gleich zwei Probleme gelöst habe: 1. Ich habe nichts zum Anziehen, 2. Ich habe kein Geld für neue Klamotten.

Jetzt habe ich zwei neue T-Shirts ohne unmittelbar auch nur einen Cent ausgegeben zu haben. Leben ist gut.

I didn't have to snip anything off on either shirt and the adjustments could be reversed if I chose to do so.

And the best thing is that I solved two problems in one go: 1. I have nothing to wear, 2. I don't have money to buy anything to wear.

Now I have two new t-shirts without imminently spending so much as one cent on them. Life's good.

Leben nach der Suppe -- Life after soup

Neulich in der Küche: Während ich mit meiner Mutter darüber philosophiere, dass man aus Allem was basteln kann, fällt mein Blick auf einen Kochtopf.

Recently, in the kitchen: While my mum and I philosophise about how you can make something out of everything, I glance at a cooking pot.

Several days later:

Voilà, eine neue Fußbank für vor den Sessel. Aus einem Topf, den seit Jahren keiner mehr benutzt hat und einem Blumenhocker, der „kaputt“ war ist das coolste Möbel geworden, das ich besitze. Man kann da nicht nur die Füße drauf legen, sondern auch ein paar Fernbedienungen und das Buch, was man gerade liest, drin lagern.

Voilà, a new footstool to use with my armchair. A pot no-one had used for years and a flower-stool that was “broken” evolved into the coolest piece of furniture I own. It's not just for putting your feet on, it also holds a few remote-controls and the book you're currently reading.

 

Zutaten:

1 Kochtopf mit Deckel

1 Blumenhocker

Dichtungs-Silikon/Acryl oder sehr starker Kleber

Schaumstoff

1 Stoffkreis, 10 cm größer als der Deckel

1 Schuhriemen

Acrylfarbe

Ingredients:

1 cooking pot with lid

1 flower-stool

silicone/ acrylic seal or very strong glue

foam padding

1 circle of fabric, 10 cm bigger than the lid

1 shoelace

acrylic paint

 

Zuerst hatte ich Bedenken, ob ich Topf und Hocker überhaupt zusammen bekomme, aber bis jetzt hält Alles ganz gut. Ansonsten hätte ich es auch anschrauben können, was bei dieser Sorte Topf problemlos möglich ist, bei normalen Töpfen aber nicht zu empfehlen. (Es würde explodieren)

Wenn ich jetzt nur noch die Füllung für den Deckel etwas runder hinbekomme, bin ich zufrieden.

Es gibt auch schon eine zweite Version, ohne Beine und mit einem alten Sofakissen als Füllung. Meine Füße stehen gerade drauf und probieren aus.

At first, I had doubts if I could make pot and stool stick together but they're holding up pretty well. I could have bolted them together, otherwise, which is no problem with this kind of pot but not recommended with the normal sort. (It would explode)

Now, if I can make the stuffing on the lid slightly rounder, I will be content.

There is also a second version with no legs and an old sofa cushion for stuffing. My feet are just standing on it and trying it out.

Linkshänder-Gitarren-Tasche -- Guitar-shaped bag, left-handed

So, das ist also meine Handtasche in Gitarren-Form.

Sie ist nicht ganz so, wie ich zuerst geplant hatte. Alles fing damit an, dass meine Handtaschen immer so groß sein müssen, dass ein Schreibblock reinpasst. Hätte ich mich daran gehalten, hätte die Tasche das Format einer richtigen ausgewachsenen Gitarre gehabt. Also habe ich den Schnitt ungefähr dreimal verkleinert, bis Alles meiner relativen Körpergröße angepasst war.

Dabei stellte ich fest, dass ich meine Tasche auf der linken Seite trage und mein Schnitt deswegen aus Versehen eine Linkshänder-Gitarren-Tasche war. Das Problem ist wohl nicht zu lösen, also beschloss ich, dass es egal ist. (Noch egaler, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich Linkshänder bin)

So, this is my guitar-shaped handbag.

It didn't turn out quite the way I'd planned. At first, it was supposed to be big enough to fit a writing pad in, like all my handbags have to be. Had I kept to that, the bag would've been the size of a real, fully-grown guitar. So I scaled the pattern down about three times until everything was relative to my height.

Doing that, I realised that I wear my handbag on the left side and, accidentally, had made a pattern for a left-handed-guitar-shaped bag. Since I can't solve that problem I decided that it doesn't matter. (Even more so since I actually am left-handed)

Die Tasche zusammenzusetzen ist ziemlich einfach. Dummerweise habe ich irgendwo einen Fehler gemacht und das Innenfutter ist im Bogen ein Stückchen zu klein (Das fiel mir auf, als ich fertig war), deswegen ist alles ein bisschen verzerrt. Das Schwierige an der ganzen Sache ist den Gurt zu befestigen (der unter Anderem aus meinem alten Gitarren-Gurt besteht), was mich zwei Nadeln und noch mehr Nerven gekostet hat.

Putting the bag together is quite simple. In my foolishness I made a mistake somewhere and the lining is a bit too small around the bend (which I realised when I was done), so everything is slightly distorted. The trickiest thing is fastening the strap (consisting, among other things, of my old guitar-strap), which cost me two needles and even more nerves.

Bis jetzt habe ich die Tasche noch nicht benutzt, aber schon Lust, noch eine zu machen, diesmal aber ein bisschen anders …

I haven't worn the bag yet but I already feel like making another different one …

Als Mensch mit unzähmbaren Haaren brauchte ich irgendwann ein paar Hilfsmittel, um die Kontrolle zu behalten. Ich hatte folgende Möglichkeiten: Haargummis (Haare zu kurz), Haarreifen (davon kriege ich Kopfweh), gekaufte Haarbänder (langweilig und zu instabil). Also: Haarbänder selber machen!

Being a person with hair that can't be tamed, I needed some tools to keep control over it. I had the following options: hair ties (hair too short), plastic headbands (give me headaches), headbands from a shop (boring and not sturdy enough). So, it was “Make your own headband”-time!

Mein 1. Versuch war dieses schwarze Ding hier. Es besteht aus zwei Streifen von einem alten T-Shirt, Nieten zum Schrauben, einem Stück Pappe und Flüssigkleber. Den Kleber kann man sich sogar sparen, weil die Nieten Alles zusammenhalten. Es ist so lang, dass man es problemlos zusammenknoten kann. Dieses Frühwerk leidet allerdings unter zwei Problemen: 1. Es ist nicht unbedingt bürotauglich, 2. Die Pappe würde sich beim ersten Wassertropfen auflösen. (Ich gehöre zu den Menschen, die im Regen nass werden, weil sie keinen Schirm dabeihaben)

My first attempt was this black thing. It's made of two strips of fabric from an old t-shirt, screw-fastened rivets (or are they called studs, as in “studded belt”?), a piece of cardboard and liquid glue. The glue could be left out, since the rivets hold everything together. It's long enough to be tied up easily. This early work suffers from two major drawbacks, though: 1. It's not exactly office-safe, 2. The cardboard would dissolve at first contact with a drop of water. (I'm one of those people who actually get wet when it's raining, because they don't carry an umbrella)

Irgendwann dann dieser 2. Versuch. Wieder besteht es aus einem Streifen Stoff, haufenweise Flüssigkleber, einer Sicherheitsnadel und, das Wichtigste, einem Streifen Plastik von einer PET-Flasche. Allerdings ist auch diese Version nicht besonders haltbar.

After a while, I made this second attempt. Again, it's made of a strip of fabric, boatloads of liquid glue, a safety pin and, most importantly, a strip of plastic from a bottle. Unfortunately, this version isn't very durable, either.

 

Also musste ich da doch mit der Nähmaschine dran und das hier ist dabei rausgekommen. Ich habe diesmal auch daran gedacht, die Ecken des Plastikstreifens rund zu schneiden und alle Kanten abzuschleifen, damit nichts durchkommt. Auch hier braucht man Kleber, damit der Plastik nicht verrutscht, wenn man den Stoff auf rechts dreht und überhaupt. Vielleicht fällt mir ja irgendwann ein, wie man es komplett ohne Kleber hinkriegt. Und unsichtbar.

PS: Die Arbeit an der Gitarren-Handtasche schreitet voran :)

So, I had to sew after all, in the end, and this is the result. I even remembered to round off the corners of the plastic strip and sand all edges so they won't push through. But glue was needed here as well, to keep the plastic from sliding out of place when turning the fabric to the right side and after that, too. Maybe I'll have an idea some day on how to do it entirely without any glue. And invisible.

PS: The guitar-shaped handbag is taking shape :)

Immer, wenn ich Möbel brauche ... - Whenever I need furniture ...

Ich bin die Julia und das hier ist mein erster Blog-Post in meinem Leben.

Heute zeige ich euch, wie man aus einem langweiligen Hängeschrank ohne viel Aufwand eine von diesen modernen „Shabby-Chic“ Kommoden bauen kann.

1. Überlegen, wofür man den Schrank braucht. Meiner ist für CDs (viele), also brauche ich mehrere Fächer, die nicht besonders hoch sind. Beim Planen und Rechnen unbedingt daran denken, wie dick die Regalbretter nachher sind.
2. Einen Schrank, den niemand mehr braucht, in der passenden Größe suchen. Zum Glück steht sowas bei uns zuhause herum.
3. Alle Teile, die eine andere Farbe bekommen – in diesem Fall nur die Tür – abmontieren, abschmirgeln und lackieren. Sollte die Tür einen Griff an der falschen Stelle haben, diesen vorher entfernen und das Loch mit einem Holzdübel verschließen.
4. Vier gleich große Holzkugeln mit Loch besorgen und lackieren.
5. Drei Holzplatten so zurechtschneiden, dass sie größer sind als der Deckel des Schranks. Eine Platte ein paar Zentimeter größer lassen als die Anderen. Diese größere Platte zwischen die Anderen „sandwichen“ und Alles zusammenleimen. Dann lackieren.
6. Für die Fächer ein paar Regalböden zurechtschneiden, diese wenn nötig auch lackieren.
7. An dieser Stelle stellte ich fest, dass ich nicht daran gedacht hatte, wie dick die Regalbretter sind. Deswegen waren die vorhandenen Löcher im Inneren des Schranks, in die man die Befestigung steckt, plötzlich sinnlos und mein ganzer schöner Plan fiel auseinander. Meine spontane Lösung: Stücke von einer Latte in der richtigen Höhe an die Innenwände nageln.
8. Die Holzkugeln unter den Schrank schrauben.
9. Die drei geleimten Platten mittig auf den Deckel des Schranks nageln. (Natürlich geht es auch mit Schrauben – das wäre zudem stabiler. Aber Nägel machen eher einen „alten“ Eindruck)
10. Regalbretter einlegen (hier stellt sich heraus, ob man die Latten an die richtige Stelle genagelt hat), Tür wieder montieren, neuen Griff befestigen, CDs einräumen und Werk bewundern lassen.

So, ich hoffe das war verständlich.

I'm Julia and this is my first blog-post. Ever.

Today, I will show you how to transform a boring kitchen cupboard into one of those modern “shabby-chic” cabinets without a lot of effort.

1. Decide what you need the cupboard for. Mine is for CDs (lots of), so I need several low-ish compartments. When planning and calculating these out, it is essential to consider how thick the boards for the shelves will be, later on.
2. Find a discarded cupboard that's the right size. Luckily, things like these lie around our house.
3. Dismount all parts that will be painted – in this case only the door – sand down and varnish. If the door has a handle in the wrong place, take this off beforehand and close the hole with a wooden plug.
4. Find four equally-sized wooden balls with holes and varnish them.
5. Cut three boards to be bigger than the top of the cupboard. Leave one board a few centimetres bigger than the others. “Sandwich” this bigger board between the others and glue them together. Then varnish this also.
6. Cut out some shelves to fit and varnish these also, if necessary.
7. At this point, I realized that I hadn't considered how thick the boards for the shelves were. So, the already existing holes inside the cupboard to hang them up were rendered useless and my nice little plan blew up. My spontaneous solution: Nailing pieces of a latch (I hope that's the right word) to the inside walls in appropriate places.
8. Screw the wooden balls under the cupboard.
9. Place the board-sandwich from no. 5 centrically on the top of the cupboard and nail it down. (Of course you could use screws, which would also be more solid, but nails give it this nice “old” look)
10. Put in the shelves (this is where you find out, if the latches are in the right places), re-mount the door, attach the new handle, put in the CDs and have your work admired.
